Course Details
This course describes the skills and knowledge required to recognise and respond to life-threatening emergencies in line with first aid guidelines determined by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) and other Australian national peak clinical bodies. The training applies to people who may be required to provide an emergency response in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.
Entry/eligibility requirements

There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:
- Reside in Western Australia;
- Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan); and
- Provide a copy of your passport or photo identification.
- Be at least 18 years of age
The unit of competency standards requires a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment.
Due to the potential risk to health and safety, any worker who does not have the physical ability to meet the competencies standards of assessment will not be issued a Statement of Attainment.
Pathways
This unit will provide credit towards a range of qualifications where these skills are required giving student options for further study in the aged, disability and community care training packages, such as:
Duration, learning method and assessment
Theory component to be completed prior to attending practical workshop.
Full day face-to-face trainer directed workshop.

Outcomes
After completing this course, you will be able to demonstrate the following skills:
- Recognise and assess an emergency situation
- Ensure safety for self, bystaders and casualty
- Assess casualty and identify the need for first aid response
- Seek assistance from emergency response services
- Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) correctly
- Provide first aid in accordance with established first aid principles
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualties
- Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
- Operate first aid equipment according to manufacturer’s instructions
- Correctly describe incident details to emergency response services
- Report details of incident to workplace supervisor as appropriate
- Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with statutory and/or organisational policies
- Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers and seek help when required
- Contribute to a review of the first aid response as required.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Given the licensing requirements for this unit, RPL is currently not offered.

Certification
Completing this skill set will be recognised by a Statement of Attainment for the unit listed above.
