Course details

The purpose of this training is to provide education on the care of a client with a tracheostomy and allow participants an opportunity to practice in a simulated environment.


Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes


By the end of the session the participants should:

  1. Understand what a Tracheostomy Tube is and their responsibilities of care.
  2. State the indications for a tracheostomy and some of the associated complications.
  3. Understand the management of the tracheostomy tube cuff, humidification, suctioning, changing or cleaning of the inner canula, stoma site assessment and dressing change and tracheostomy tube securement.
  4. State how communication with the client changes.
  5. Understand the importance of record keeping and reporting.
  6. Understand the importance of infection control principals.
  7. Demonstrate cuff management, suctioning, changing of inner tube, stoma care and tube securement.
Entry requirements

Entry requirements

There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:

  • Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan);
  • Be at least 18 years of age

This course is delivered face to face at our Rivervale training venue for a duration of 7 hours by our experienced industry Trainers.

A certificate of participation is issues to each learner confirming the learning outcome.
