Name: Vicki Ainsworth
What is your professional background?
"I’ve worked predominantly as a cleaner but also as a courier."
What course are you currently studying/training in?
"CHC33015 – Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)."
What are your future career goals/aspirations?
"For now, to pass this course and grow my skills."
Why have you selected to study at Amana Living Training Institute?
" researched a variety of training providers and decided Amana Living was the best one as it works across pretty much every aspect of aged care – right from residential to home care."
Why have you been drawn to work in the aged-care industry?
" My father had dementia which initially exposed me to aged-care. I also worked as a cleaner at another aged-care organisation where I found I really enjoyed talking to and working with older people. I have a real passion for it. Just a ten-minute chat with a resident can brighten their day and yours."
Is the course what you expected?
"I didn’t expect it to be this challenging. I’m more of a hands-on person, so I’ve found a lot of the theory side of things rather difficult. However, I understand the importance of it and the trainers are so helpful. They’re extremely passionate, patient and motivating. Even when I have felt challenged, the trainers have made me feel comfortable which has certainly helped me in my learning."
What are the advantages of studying at the Amana Living Training Institute?
"Again, the trainers have stood out for me. They have years of actual workplace experience, so they really understand the ins and outs of the industry."
What has been the most enjoyable/rewarding part of your course?
"I’ve really enjoyed educating myself – I feel I have learnt so much already. I also really enjoyed going to one of the sites (James Brown Care Centre in Osborne Park) where the staff were accommodating and welcoming. They were so helpful and it has given me a great insight into what it’s like to work at a residential care centre. We were also trusted and able to go at our own pace which made the whole experience a comfortable one."
What has been the biggest challenge?
"Getting my head around the theory. As I mentioned earlier, I feel I am more of a hands-on learner, so it’s been a bit of an adjustment for me. That said, it’s been a great learning curve and I am really enjoying it."
What advice would you tell people thinking about training at the Amana Living Training Institute?
"Just go for it! It’s a wonderful place to learn as you’re treated so well."
