“Employers report that a significant number of graduates they interview are not suitable for employment at their worksite and there are providers from whom they will not recruit graduates,” said the Skills SA report.
To improve the quality of Certificate III training, employers recommended students have more time to develop practical skills and either hold or develop the right personal attributes to work in the industry. Content should also be strengthened in the areas of dementia, palliative care, infection control and a person-centred approach.
Over the past few years, ALTI has closely worked with several aged care providers and industry bodies to understand the training needs of employers. We know that they are looking for staff who are practically trained and equipped to work in the industry, and so we have introduced a face-to-face learning method with workplace training to give students the practical knowledge and skills they needed to perform their role competently.
All students are required to attend the face-to-face workshops as agreed in their training plan.
In doing so, students are able to practise their required skills in a simulated environment that they will later apply in their workplace. These workshops also give students the opportunity to engage and interact with the subject matter expert (their trainer) and with other students.
Another positive feature of the workshops is the chance to build support networks with the trainer and other students. This boosts the students’ confidence in their ability to complete in-class and post-course assignments/assessments successfully.
