Role: Registered Nurse, Transition Care
Length of aged care service:1.5 years
How did you get into aged care?
I started working as a carer while studying my Certificate III in Aged Care as a pathway to university. After graduating from university, I continued working as a carer as there wasn’t a lot of graduate nursing roles available. This is the work I did at Amana Living initially in order to widen my network. Then, Amana Living offered me a job as a Registered Nurse (RN) and I’ve been working at the Transition Care centre since November 2016.
What do you love about working in aged care?
I thrive in the aged care environment. I have a connection with older people and find them easier to bounce off. They have a lot of stories to tell and we can all learn a lot from them. Also, I love forming relationships with our clients and really getting to know the person as an individual. In Transition Care, we have more time to spend with each person so can really develop and deliver a care plan that is tailored to them.
It’s pretty special. We have so much fun it’s ridiculous!
What training have you undertaken?
I have Certificate 3 in Aged Care from TAFE and a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) degree from Edith Cowan University.
Since being with Amana Living, I’ve undertaken diabetes education, medication training and I’m about to do an aged care rehabilitation course, which I’m quite excited about.
There are a lot of opportunities for formal training but we also do a lot of team building and professional development on-the-job. There is a staff development nurse who has been hugely supportive of me since the beginning, and the other RNs have been a big help too.
What is your advice to someone thinking about working in aged care?
It’s great. There are so many perks and heaps of opportunities for education and climbing the ladder. You get to spend time with amazing people and work with experienced staff.
You get one-on-one time with the clients and deliver unique care to each person, which is different to a hospital environment where you see different patients every shift. It’s really satisfying as you’re making a difference to someone’s life.
There’s a lot to be gained from working in aged care.
Would you recommned working at Amana Living to others?
Yes, everyone at Amana Living is very approachable, and willing to have a conversation with you and listen to your views. I feel like I have a voice, I’m respected and well-rewarded.
We are here to make the customers happy and provide high-end care. We’re proud to provide such an amazing service. There is a good culture and people are here for the right reasons.
I’m excited about having this first part of my career at Amana Living.
