Course Details
This course is recommended for people who prepare and provide medication assistance or support to clients who self-administer medication.
The skills are applied in accordance with legislation, regulation, government policy and industry guidelines
This unit may be used as a credit towards other qualifications in the health or community sector.
Entry/eligibility requirements
There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, however to be eligible, you must:
- Reside in Western Australia;
- Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills; and
- Provide proof of identity
Prior to undertaking practical placement, you will be required to provide:
- Current National Police Clearance or NDIS Worker Screen Check
Students must be able to follow and recall instructions and information provided by the trainer in English in order to complete all the required course activities for assessment.
The unit of competency standards requires a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment.
Due to the potential risk to health and safety, any worker who does
not have the physical ability to meet the competencies standards of
assessment will not be issued a Statement of Attainment.
Duration, learning method and assessment
- Duration: One day face-to-face workshop, plus 1-hour workplace observation in a work environment.
- Learning method: Face-to-face workshop, including on-course assessment consisting of written and verbal questioning, workplace practical skills observation
- Assessment: On-site practical assessment.

Outcomes
After completing this course, you will be able to demonstrate the following skills:
- Prepare and support clients with administration of medication
- Complete medication administration records according to organisation procedures and regulatory requirements
- Handle medication contingencies
- Document and address all inconsistencies according to organisation guidelines and procedures
- Complete medication distribution and documentation
- Correctly use and interpret health terminology that describes the normal structure, function and location of the major body systems
- Recognise and promote ways to support healthy functioning of the body
- Confirm that equipment and all forms of medication to be administered are complete, ready for distribution and up to date
- Follow infection prevention and control procedures
- Establish scope of own ability to provide assistance with medication according to organisation guidelines and jurisdictional regulatory requirements
- Check individual client medications according to organisation procedures
