Course Details

This course is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to work in the Aged Care industry in a residential care facility under supervision with clearly defined guidelines and services plans. This qualification reflects the role of support workers who follow an individualised care plan to provide person centred care to clients.

Care workers’ duties include:

  • Carrying out activities to maintain an individuals’ well-being through personal care and/or general activities of daily living.
  • Carry out tasks related to an individualised client care plan.
  • Support community participation and social inclusion.
  • Reporting directly to a supervisor.
Entry requirements

Entry & eligibility requirements

There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:

  • Reside in Western Australia;
  • Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan);
  • Have a current COVID-19 vaccination (unless exempt); and
  • Provide a copy of your passport or photo identification.

Prior to undertaking practical placement, you will be required to provide:

  • Current Police Clearance (no older than six months) or NDIS Worker Screening Check; and
  • A current flu vaccination (unless exempt).
Pathways

Career & study pathways

This certificate qualifies you to pursue roles such as support/care worker, care assistant, client assistant, community care worker, family support worker, home care assistant, respite care worker, nurse’s assistant, planned activity assistant, residential care worker or transport support worker.

These are all roles that require you to carry out direct care and support activities based on an individualised client plan while reporting directly to a supervisor.

Those with this qualification may wish to continue by studying CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing or CHC42015 Certificate IV in Community Services and/or a nursing qualification.


Study Method

Duration, learning method and assessment

The delivery of this qualification is a blended delivery mode of regular attendance to face-to-face workshops and self-study. The total duration for this qualification may be between 6 to 12 months and can be completed at a pace that suits the individual student.

Forms of study include:

  • Face to face trainer directed workshops
  • Practical skills and written assessments
  • 140 hours of work placement learning

There is no cost for this course. This course is funded by the FREE IN ’23 government initiative available from 1 January 2023.
