Course details

The course provides essential training for individuals who assist clients with complex bowel care needs, typically in healthcare settings such as aged care, disability services, or home care.

Delivered by trainers with a clinical background and with relevant industry experience.

Learning Outcomes:

· the basic anatomy of the digestive system

· the importance of regular bowel care, stool characteristics and related signs and symptoms, nutrition and hydration requirements

· observing and recording changes in bowel habits

· related conditions including autonomic dysreflexia

· symptoms/indications of need for intervention and when to refer to a health practioner

· basic tools used to observe and record changes in bowels

· understanding of intervention options and techniques

· administration of non-routine medication as required (PRN medications)

· 6 Rights of medication administration

· recognising the intensely personal nature of this type of support

· consent

· hygiene and infection control procedures

· support plan information

· general considerations of rectal medication administration

Entry requirements

There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:

  • Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan)
  • Be at least 18 years of age

This course is delivered face to face at our Rivervale training venue for a duration of 2.5 hours by our experienced industry Trainers.
