This course is an overview of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and how it can affect the ability to swallow safely. It also covers an overview of food and fluid modifications and safe swallowing strategies that can reduce the risk of a choking or aspirating. Practical component of the training session sees participants practice back blows and chest thrusts and steps involved in preparing thickened fluids.
Topics that are covered:
- Dysphagia and its signs and symptoms
- Assisting people with dysphagia safely and compassionately
- Food modification and why it is required
- International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI)
- Dealing with choking/aspiration emergency
There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, however to be eligible, you must:
- Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan)
- Be at least 18 years of age
This course is delivered face to face at our Rivervale training venue for a duration of 4 hours by our experienced industry Trainers.
