Course Details

This course is an overview of swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) and how it can affect the ability to swallow safely. It also covers an overview of food and fluid modifications and safe swallowing strategies that can reduce the risk of a choking or aspirating.

Topics that can be covered:

  • Dysphagia and its signs and symptoms
  • Why older people with dysphagia are at risk
  • Assisting people with dysphagia safely and compassionately
  • Dealing with choking/aspiration emergency

This course can be customised to meet organisational workforce needs.

Entry requirements

Entry requirements

There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:

  • Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan);
  • Be at least 18 years of age

Study method

This course is delivered face to face at our Training venue by our Registered Nurse Trainers.
