WA aged care and disability service providers can access up to $300,000* in funding to help train their workforce thanks to a new initiative from the Western Australian Government.

The “Enterprise Training Program” provides funding to support the development of an organisation’s existing workforce with the Department of Training and Workforce Development subsidising up to 80 per cent of eligible training.    

In order to access the Enterprise Training Program, employers must partner with an approved Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and submit a joint proposal with the employer contributing 20 per cent of the training cost.   The training must utilise the qualifications, skills sets or units of competency contained within the Health and Community Services Training Packages. Funding is being allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

There is no limit on the number of employees that can be trained under the program. It is expected that the RTOs will be notified of the outcome within 2 weeks of making an application.

The Department of Training and Workforce Development has also announced the creation of a Pre-Traineeship Program where new sector entrants can study either a 52841WA 

Certificate II - Introduction to Aged Care or a 52840WA Certificate II – Introduction to Disability Care. The qualifications have been introduced as a pathway to Certificate III - Individual Support (Ageing/Disability/Home and Community Care).

The Pre-Traineeship Program gives students the opportunity to gain an understanding and experience in either the aged care or disability services sector. Students will undertake on and off the job training, establishing contact with a potential employer through a work placement. Plus, if they pursue further studies, the content of the Certificate II greatly reduces the time to complete a Certificate III by around three months.

For employers, the Pre-Traineeship Program is a great way to identify potential new recruits who have shown the right aptitude and attitude to work in either aged care or disability services. The scheme will reduce drop-out rates of new recruits as students will have experienced the sector and discovered whether they want to pursue a career.   

Employers who participate in the Pre-Traineeship Program can be involved in the screening process for potential students and sit on the selection panel. The RTO is responsible for arranging, coordinating and monitoring the work placement, and employers will be paid for supervising students who undertake a work placement with them.

* Funding of up to $200,000 is available for individual organisations or $300,000 for a consortium of organisations. The funding application must be submitted as a joint proposal with the Registered Training Organisation and include a 20 per cent employer contribution. This will be reduced for regional organisations.
