Course Details
This course is recommended for people who are required to use manual handling techniques to ensure their own health and safety, and that of others in a work environment that involves direct client care.
The focus is on maintaining safety of the worker, the people being supported and other community and workplace members in both centre-based and home-based environments’.
Entry/eligibility requirements
There are no pre-entry study or qualification requirements, but to be eligible, you must:
- Reside in Western Australia;
- Possess suitable English language, literacy and numeracy skills (e.g. you will need to be able to read, understand and communicate care requirements on a care plan); and
- Provide a copy of your passport or photo identification.
- Be at least 18 years of age
The unit of competency standards requires a level of physical ability to meet the evidence requirements for assessment.
Due to the potential risk to health and safety, any worker who does not have the physical ability to meet the competencies standards of assessment will not be issued a Statement of Attainment.
Career and study pathways
The units in this course will provide credit towards a range of qualifications where these skills are required giving student options for further study in the aged, disability and community care training packages in courses such as:
- CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing)
- CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Home and Community)
- CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Disability)
Duration, learning method and assessment
The delivery of this course is a blended delivery mode of attendance to a 1 day face-to-face workshop and self-study. The total duration for this qualification may be between 2 – 4 weeks depending on the learner.
Forms of study include:
- Face to face clustered lecturer/trainer directed workshops
- Workshop based practical skills and written assessments
- Post course assignments
- On the job assessments (if applicable)
An annual refresher of this course is recommended.

Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is an assessment of your prior skills, knowledge and life experiences that can be transferred to complete aspects of your current course requirements.
You might already possess some of the skills or knowledge being assessed on this course. If so, you may not be required to complete one or more of the units of competency.
You first need to apply to have your knowledge and skills assessed for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). This must be done when you enrol on the course.
